The Secret to Success: Setting Realistic Goals

When the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Resolutions begin, we want to remind you to set realistic goals for your 2019 weight loss. Start 2019 by making small goals that converge into your overall long term goal, making healthy habits for your lifetime. There are a few questions to ask yourself before setting realistic goals:
  • What is motivating you today to make changes?
  • What will help keep you motivated in the future?
  • If I reach my goal, how will my life change?
  • What happens once I do reach my goal?
  • Are there bad habits that I think I will go back to? If so, how can I set my goals so that I can be successful?
Once you have answered the questions above, and are willing to make lifestyle changes, you are ready to set goals.
  1. For starters, you want to begin by setting measurable goals. Use the acronym “SMART” to set your goals: Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant, Time Bound. 
  2. Once you have established exactly what you want to work on, it’s time to create your own personal weight loss plan. Forget the weight loss plan your brother, aunt or coworker did, cater this to your personal needs and struggles.
  3. Surround yourself with positive and supportive people. Having a support team helps keep you accountable even during the hardest times.
  4. Begin to prepare for failure before it occurs. Don’t give up completely and throw all you’ve learned out the window because of a slip up. No one eats perfectly 100% of the time. Your goal should be to learn how to decrease these splurges and grow from past mistakes. If these little failures have become daily habits again, then follow step 5.
  5. Continue to reassess your goals and make adjustments. If you are constantly failing and not meeting your goals, you need to sit back and reevaluate what you are willing to change.  Start small and go from there.
